Matt Berninger, frontman of The National, is back on track! Quite often, you have to wait for the guy to find some drive, but this time Matt gets straight into gear: “Martini Me Fasto” (#1) comes with a delicious uptempo beat, and we can only appreciate that! There’s no new album announced just yet, unlike July’s runner-up: The Jayhawks, who have dropped an equally breezy, uptempo garage-pop-rocker with “Keeping Our Heads Above Water” (#2). Their new album, “Sanctuary Park”, is scheduled for release at the end of August! Just one more month to wait before we can get our hands on their 13th studio album.
Morrissey just sneaks onto the podium with “Hello Hell” (#3). These days, it has become increasingly common to release some extra material a few months after an album has come out! And Moz is guilty of it too: at the end of last month, he released a little 12-inch gem on yellow vinyl, with “Hello Hell” as the main addition.
For the rest, I’m afraid I’ll have to repeat myself: just like last month, the selection is exceptionally strong for the summer season. Normally, it’s a struggle during this time of year to scrape together enough quality material to offer. Sadly, no cigar for the following 15 artists, who just missed the cut in July (listed in alphabetical order): Allah-Las, Beck, Cage The Elephant, Darling Buds, Django Django, Dry Cleaning, Girl and Girl, Mountain Goats, Nouvelle Vague, Pete Yorn, Phoebe Bridgers, Sugar, Jesse Malin, Westside Cowboy and Wolf Alice.
