Lou Reed – Sally Can’t Dance (1974)

All your two-bit psychiatrists are giving you electroshock.

As a big fan of Lou Reed and his unique approach to music, I couldn’t ignore Sally Can’t Dance. Its was a must-have for my vinyl collection—there was simply no way I could let this one be missing from my shelves. This 1974 album might not be his most acclaimed work, but it holds a special place in his discography. In fact, it was his biggest commercial success, despite Reed himself disliking it.

From the first track, Ride Sally Ride, you can feel that Reed is taking a different direction. The glam rock influences are clear, but it lacks the raw emotion of Berlin or the playful genius of Transformer. Still, the album has its moments. Kill Your Sons is one of the most gripping songs, where Reed processes his traumatic youth and electroshock therapy in a cynical yet powerful track.

Then there’s Ennui, a song that almost feels like a follow-up to Perfect Day. It has that melancholic undertone that Reed captured so well. But not everything on this album works. Animal Language feels like a strange misstep, with animal sounds and an almost comedic tone that doesn’t quite fit with the rest of the album.

What makes this album even more interesting is the context in which it was made. At the time, Reed was deeply immersed in his destructive lifestyle and had little control over the production. According to producer Steve Katz, he spent most of the recordings in the bathroom, preoccupied with drugs. This might explain why Reed later said he had recorded the album “in twenty minutes and didn’t care about it.”

Still, Sally Can’t Dance remains a fascinating album. It’s not his best work, but it deserves more recognition than it often gets. Perhaps it was a cynical attempt to score a hit, or maybe it was an experiment that didn’t quite land. But one thing is certain: it’s an album that you can’t just dismiss.
